New year's hat and horns for celebrating the new year

As we reach the end of one year and the start of the next, it’s common to ask yourself what changes you’re going to make in the new year. Are you going to commit to eating better, working out more, taking some classes or maybe thinking about a career change? Pests are probably not a part of your new year’s resolutions. However, by making some relatively small changes, you can reduce the chance that you have to deal with a pest infestation in the new year. And you don’t need pesticides or elaborate traps to make it happen. If you have a pest infestation, you can rely on Magic Exterminating for residential or commercial extermination services. But if you follow a few key resolutions, there’s a chance you won’t need to call us at all.

Resolution One: Decluttering Your Home

Pests like to hide and nest in areas that are quiet, dark, and undisturbed. So, the more clutter you have for pests to hide behind, in, or under in your home, the greater the risk of a pest infestation. Roaches, mice, and bed bugs all seek easy access to areas where they will be able to feed and reproduce without being bothered. Because of that, it’s important to be vigilant in minimizing clutter in your home at all times. Doing this won’t just deter pests, it’ll also make for a tidier, more pleasant home.

Resolution Two: Cleaning Your Kitchen

Two of the biggest attractants for pests are shelter and access to a food source. So, keeping your kitchen clean has a huge impact on keeping pests out. If you have food left open and unattended on your counters, or the dishes from last night’s dinner are still in the sink, you’re putting yourself at risk for a visit from some uninvited pests. Any food left out in your kitchen can attract mice or ants. Keep your food sealed and stored properly and your kitchen clean, and that will help you avoid attracting bugs and rodents in your neighborhood.

Resolution Three: Seal up Your Home

Pests don’t appear out of thin air. They enter through some kind of opening in the exterior of your home. So, take the time to find and seal any potential entry points in or around the exterior of your home. Pay special attention to windows and doors, as well as your foundation, vents, and gaps around any electric conduits, gas lines, or pipes. Check to make sure your door sweeps and weatherstripping are in good repair and if they’re not, replace them when you can.

Resolution Four: Be Careful With Your Firewood

It can be really nice to have a wood fire in the winter. It looks cozy, smells nice and… can inadvertently help pests get in. To reduce the risk of bringing spiders, ants, flies, or any other pests that are living in your wood pile into your home, it’s important to keep your firewood at least 20 feet away from your home. Only take what you plan on burning at the time, and always inspect the wood before you bring it inside. If you do that, you’ll be able to stay warm and help avoid bringing pests in from the cold.
